Definition of Laser eye treatment

Medical statistics have shown that laser treatment procedures are commonly performed to correct eye deficiencies, after which patients do not require any sort of eyewear such as glasses or contact lenses to see clearly. The laser procedure rectifies eyesight by molding the cornea into a round, equal form, which allows unobstructed light to be reflected inside the eye. People who are near sighted or far sighted usually have a deformed cornea, which prevents light from being precisely reflected in the eyes which causes blurred of even double vision.

Significance of laser treatment

In accordance with the American Academy of Ophthalmology, laser treatment procedures are usually performed to rectify ordinary or customary eyesight defects such as nearsightedness or farsightedness and blurred vision. It does not and cannot correct many other eye defects that occur with the onset of age, which makes it hard to see objects that are quite close. Occasionally laser eye treatments can results in the loss of eyesight leading to blindness which cannot be reversed.

Kinds of laser treatment

The most frequent laser treatment procedure is LASIK, which is a procedure that cuts away the eye flap to bare the cornea. Then the lasers remake the cornea, thereby resulting in perfect eyesight. Other eye treatments that are as commonly used as LASIK include LASEK, which is ‘laser assisted epithelia Keratomileusis’ and also photorefractive Keratomileusis which corrects the defect in the cornea without cutting the eye flap   to create an opening.

Effects of laser eye treatment

Most patient who undergo laser treatment, around 90 percent or so, get back their normal vision of 20/20 or even 20/40 after undergoing LASIK surgical procedures. Absolute healing of the eye takes from two to three months. While the eyes are healing, the patient will usually feel a mind-numbing burning feeling around which disappears after the eyes are completely healed.

LASIK eye surgery is quite simple to perform and basically does not cause any pain to the patient. Because of this, the patient is not required to receive any sedation and is not unconscious during the surgery. However a local anesthesia is applied in the form of eye drops. The LASIK procedure takes a few minutes and rectifies the deficiency in the cornea. The procedure is computer controlled and managed which guides the laser beam to perform the required correction (s).

Complications

Sometimes medical problems arise from laser eye treatments in the form of contamination or a continuous burning sensation felt by the patient. This happens when impurities find their way into the eyes during or even after the procedure. Since the corneal flap is infected, more surgery is needed to ensure that the flap remain shut. The cornea usually swells and this condition is referred to as ectasia. During the recovery period, some cannot patients cannot see at all, while some recover their eyesight immediately after the procedure.

The procedure may be quite expensive and could be way beyond your budget, but if you need to get rid of your glasses or contact lenses, this is probably the best option. However, it is advised to consult a reputed doctor to ensure that you receive the plan best suited to your budget and needs.
